March 28, 2017 — It was just another ordinary day at a mall in the Philippines for Ahyan Yerro. She works at the Nike store in the mall, as an assistant supervisor.
Then to her surprise, a tattooed tourist approached her to ask for assistance. With him was a barefoot, street kid in dirty clothes.
Ahyan instructed a staff member to measure the boy’s foot size and help them try shoes on. The tattooed man allowed the boy to select the shoes that he wanted. The boy’s eyes lit up when he was looking through the selection but he tried to find the cheapest pair at first. The man told him not to worry about the price, and to just choose the pair he likes best. The boy ended up choosing running shoes, which they got for 40% off.
According to a staff member, the young boy was hesitant to wear the shoes at first because he thought other kids might be jealous of him. Luckily, they managed to persuade him. Once he put on on his new kicks, he was instantly beaming with a smile.
Mara Karmela, a government employee, happened to be in the Nike store at the same time. She watched the whole thing happen and was nearly brought to tears when she saw how grateful the boy was. Mara had this to say: “I was having a bad day at work. And all the crazy things going on. It was really a good reminder to not give up.”
It is incredible how a simple act of kindness can brighten the world!
