The desire for recognition is common. It is typical to want to be held in high regard by other people. As such, people spend their whole lives seeking validation and trying to attain higher status in society. And ironically, the more you seek validation validation, the more elusive it is.
Chasing validation is a fool’s game. I have found that we are most powerful and successful when we focus on authentically building up other people. “Authentically” is the key word there. Never give people meaningless praise. It doesn’t help anyone and makes you look insincere. Rather, learn to see the good in other people and highlight it. Put a spotlight on it.
Everyone has positive attributes. Be attentive to them and point them out. By giving others recognition, we build them up and encourage them. It is like watering a plant.
People often do not know how smart they are, how funny they are, how beautiful they are, etc. Let them know! When we give genuine praise and recognition to other people, there is an interesting side effect – we feel good about ourselves too! By lifting other people up, they can feel that you are their ally, that you are on their team. This will positively inform how they feel about you and how they treat you.
Remember, life is not a competition to see who can get to the top of the mountain first. Uplift those around you and you will soon be surrounded by uplifted people. Undoubtedly, you’ll see that uplifted people are also uplifting people!
